Storage of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in the Netherlands
Summary
The fossil aviation fuel for Schiphol Airport will be partly replaced by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in the coming years. This includes biofuels in the first instance and increasingly hydrogen-based e-fuels. One of the terminals that supplies Schiphol Airport with fuel has asked eFuelution to support the conversion of the existing infrastructure so that it meets the JIG standards for aviation fuels, among other things. The facilities consist of 60,000 m³ of storage tanks, pipelines, filtration systems and quality control systems.
Challenge
The terminal wants to future-proof its infrastructure to respond to the increasing demand for sustainable fuels. This requires a detailed understanding of the technical and operational requirements for the storage of (e)methanol and (bio)ethanol. In addition, the economic feasibility of different expansion scenarios must be assessed in order to make the right investment.
Solution
eFuelution supported the customer in the early phases of the project by:
- Documentation of requirements: Defining the new technical and operational requirements for the infrastructure.
- Concept design: Developing a concept design for the necessary modifications to the tanks, pipelines, filtration and quality control systems.
- CAPEX calculation: Calculating the capital investment (CAPEX) required for the implementation of the changes. These activities were carried out in close collaboration with the product owners to ensure that the adapted infrastructure is fully compliant with the specifications for SAF.
Result
With the concept design and the accompanying CAPEX calculation, eFuelution has provided the customer with a solid basis to realize the transition to SAF storage and distribution. These modifications will enable the terminal to play a key role in making the aviation sector more sustainable and to ensure the supply of SAF to Schiphol Airport.
