PhoeniX EMS for offices and buildings: Implementation
Summary
For its location in Hendrik Ido Ambacht, VMB Automation has commissioned a PhoeniX Energy Management System (PhoeniX EMS) for Offices and Buildings. The system optimizes the energy consumption of the business premises by smartly controlling the use of heat pumps, charging stations, solar panels and baseload. Thanks to dynamic linking to energy prices and weather forecasts, VMB can increase solar self-consumption and shift energy consumption to favorable times. VMB achieves a total annual cost saving of 36%, while maintaining comfort and continuity of business operations.
Challenge
VMB Automation’s business premises have a complex energy profile:
- Two large heat pumps (70 kW underfloor heating and 40 kW top cooling/heating).
- Approximately 300 solar panels with an annual generation of 80 MWh.
- Two charging points for electric vehicles.
- A considerable baseload due to workshop, ventilation and lighting.
The challenge was to no longer have these installations operate separately from each other, but to coordinate them centrally and smartly. Dynamic energy prices, peak loads, and a tenant had to be taken into account.
Solution
Smart control with PhoeniX EMS
The PhoeniX EMS integrates all installations into one platform and controls them based on dynamic data:
- Charging stations: charging sessions are shifting to moments of cheap or self-generated electricity.
- Heat pump 1: preheat during hours with low prices or high PV generation, without loss of comfort.
- Heat pump 2: optimizing cooling/heating where possible linked to solar generation.
- Solar panels: maximum utilization by aligning consumption with generation, which increases self-consumption.
Financial and operational optimization By switching to a dynamic energy contract and smart EMS control, VMB can save significantly on energy costs, while reducing dependence on grid power.
